The radio is not very easy to use, so I gave up after an hour and read a manual to seek for description of some features. Unfortunately, the manual is not well written, I would even say it is a crap. So I still have several questions regarding the radio.
- Equalizer: Radio uses some sophisticated algorithms by Audyssey. They say that this should make the sound as comfortable as possible for everybody. I am not into sound algorithms, but I still know that the best way to make a sound balanced is to allow a user to adjust bass and treble level. Audassey people are probably of different opinion. Maybe they think that if someone pays $990 for a radio player (yes, it is really so expensive in Czech republic), then he is so stupid that he should not be allowed to adjust bass level. At least the manual says nothing about this.
- Connecting from radio to PC: The manual says it is possible to share files from PC to the radio using Windows Media Player. I prefer operating system over MS Windows, so I can't install WMP. First, I wanted to give up (manual says that WMP is necessary to share files) but then I googled for a while and found out that the sharing is done via Universal Plug and Play. They could have mentioned this in a manual, it would save me some time :(. Nevertheless, now I know that I don't need WMP, I can use free uShare instead.
- Connecting from PC to radio: The radio is a kind of a computer, so one could expect that it can be controlled via some web interface. Still, manual says nothing again... Nevertheless, the radio listens on ports 80, 8080 a 10100. On the first two, the only response is Document Error: Site or Page Not Found (...) Access Error: Site or Page Not Found (...) Cannot open URL and PRESENTATION PAGE, respectively, and the last returns endless xml file with metadata of currently played streams. On the port 8080, the radio even communicates over https. But I have not found anything else.
- Clock setting: Radio shows current time whenever it is in standby mode. I would appreciate if I could turn this feature off, as we already have clocks on a termometer and an oven, which is enough for 25 square meters large flat :)
- User friendliness: there is a button "Internet radio" on a remote control. If I want to listen to some internet radio, I press the button and get the menu. But this does not work when some internet radio is being played and I want to switch to another one. In this case, I have to press "return" to get the menu.
To sum everything up, I am convinced that the radio (or at least the software inside) is unfinished, and that this must be known even to a manufacturer. That's why I hope that Denon will some day release a new firmware version, which will solve at least some of the mentioned problems (Equalizer is a must and web interface would be nice).
Unlike the Yamaha player, I'm not returning this radio back to a shop where I bought it. First, it has really great sound (as well as Yamaha had), second, none of "bugs" I found so far are as fatal as in the previous case, and third, my wife told me she kills me if I return the radio back again :).
