"No ale když vy chcete ¬C, co by potom dělali ti co chtějí C?"
Paní, která mi odpovídala, má vysokou školu. A úřední razítko :-(

Genius Ergo 525: The useless mouse
I ordered a mouse with my new notebook. I choose Genius Ergo 525, the main reason was that it seemed that it was equipped with 12 buttons. I say it seemed, because it was not! The mouse has 8 buttons (only 7 of them generate events recognizable by computer, and only 5 of them are recognised by X) and 4 bloody "keys", i.e. the buttons that behave as keys on keyboard in my Gentoo (and also in Kubuntu).
More precisely, if I press e.g. the button marked "+", the events
are generated.
Obviously, some engineer was very smart again, because he "knew" that if someone needs a mouse, than he surely needs two buttons for volume control and two buttons to control audio player. Yes, of course I can change actions assigned to these keys, but this also changes actions assigned to appropriate keys on real keyboard. So I can make my choice. Either I will be able to change the volume by mouse and keyboard, or by none of the two. Next time, I'll buy myself a Logitech mouse :-)

Too old for Kubuntu
I have a new laptop (Lenovo 3000 V200). I was quite busy when it arrived so I wanted to install Linux as quickly as possible, so I installed Ubuntu with KDE. This was the first time I installed non-Gentoo Linux on my computer. First hours were great: everything seemed to work just after the installation. OK, I'm quite used to my Fvwm desktop, but I agreed to give it up for the comfort of Kubuntu.
But after a day, my dreams were gone. Installation of Compiz took me more than five hours (the laptop has non-standard video card) and I bet it wouldn't take longer in Gentoo. Next, my wireless card stopped working. Of course that turning the computer off and on again helped (yes, Ubuntu is very similar to MS Windows), but in general I appreciate if I know what is going on.
My last experience with Kubuntu was installation of KDE 4. There is a straightforward manual for this, I followed it and what I got was a real mess -- some hybrid of KDE 3 and 4. No, thanks.
Now I've got Gentoo on the laptop together with good old Fvwm. I did not manage to install my wifi yet, but at least I know what I can expect.
